What insomnia treatments should I choose?

Insomnia affects more and more people of all ages. This may cause problems with falling asleep in the evening or waking up at night. Lack of comfortable sleep disturbs the rest and does not allow the body to regenerate properly. The result is malaise, drowsiness and fatigue during the day, irritability, headaches, energy loss and lower productivity. Fortunately, effective insomnia treatments are now available to help people with this unpleasant condition.

What are the causes of insomnia?

Insomnia very often occurs as a result of unpleasant emotional events (e.g. family problems, loss of job). In some cases it can also be caused by shift work and related sleep disturbances. With time, the problem becomes chronic, and fear of further sleep problems makes it even more serious. It is very difficult to determine a specific moment that requires treatment. Over-the-counter (OTC) insomnia preparations and drugs

In the initial phase of the problem you can reach for herbal dietary supplements, which are available in pharmacies without a prescription. We can choose the melatonin. It is the equivalent of a natural hormone produced in the human body by the pineal gland. It is best to take it at a fixed time, just before bedtime (e.g. between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.). The recommended dose is 1 to 6 mg. Melatonin makes it easier to fall asleep and improves the quality of sleep. It is perfect especially for people who have disturbed sleep rhythm (e.g. due to shift work). It is also recommended if you change the time zones (jet lag appears).
Herbal preparations are also suitable for a mild form of insomnia. We can reach for supplements containing extracts of hop cones, lemon balm or valerian. They have a calming effect, therefore they are recommended especially in cases when problems with falling asleep are caused by stress or nervous stimulation. They should be taken about 30-60 minutes before bedtime. Pharmacies also offer preparations combining herbal extracts with melatonin.
It is worth remembering, however, that supplements are only an ad hoc solution, which cannot be used too often, so that it does not turn out that without them we can no longer fall asleep normally.

Insomnia drugs

If melatonin and other over-the-counter remedies do not help, it is worth going to a doctor who will recommend tests and help diagnose the specific cause of insomnia. A number of pharmacological agents are used in the treatment. Short-term insomnia treatments are often recommended. Just take them a dozen or so minutes before bedtime. The medication is taken about 2-3 weeks and takes a few days off so that the body does not become addicted. In this group there was a zolpidem, a clot, a clot, a clot, a clot. Your doctor can also prescribe benzodiazepines. They are usually recommended when short-term insomnia treatments do not work. Benzodiazepines are more addictive. Sometimes small doses of antidepressants (e.g. doxepine, amitriptyline, mianserine) are recommended for the treatment of insomnia.
In therapy, however, it is very important not only to use pharmacological preparations, but also to diagnose the cause of insomnia and eliminate it.
